EU Car Registrations Rise 1.6% in May
Passenger car registrations in the European Union increased by 1.6% year-on-year to 926,582 units in May 2025, following a 1.3% rise in April. The biggest increases were recorded in Spain (18.6%) and the Netherlands (7.3%), while registrations in Germany rose by 1.2%. By contrast, registrations dropped in Belgium (-11.7%) and Italy (-0.1%).
In the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, registrations soared by 25% to 142,766 units, driven notably by a significant increase in Germany (44.9%). However, in the first five months of 2025, overall car registrations dropped by 0.6% year-on-year to 4.567 million units. New battery-electric car sales surged by 26.1%, reaching 701,089 units and capturing 15.4% of the total EU market share. Three of the four largest BEV markets in the EU — Germany (43.2%), Belgium (26.7%), and the Netherlands (6.7%) — accounted for 62% of all BEV registrations. Conversely, France saw a decline of 7.1%.
